  I upgraded the libpng package and that resolved the compilation problem.
Now 1.08a is installed and running on my workstation and notebook.

  The most immediate difference I noted is the apparent change in font size.
A page title that fit on a single line when I developed the presentation
using 1.07a ended up with two or more characters on a second line when I
upgraded to 1.08a and ran through the presentation again. I had to drop the
default title font size from 7 to 6 to make it fit. I also had to juggle
line breaks on many pages to accommodate the change in versions. Strange.

  Too late for me to change the current talk to use .png instead of .jpg.
I'm off in a few hours to the meeting. But, ... next time I'll know.
