(mgp-users 00596) Error building 1.08a and a question about transparency

I've just put together the presentation I'm giving this coming Tuesday so
I thought to upgrade from 1.07 to 1.08a. The steps of ./configure, xmkmf,
and make Makefiles went just fine. The make step was going along nicely
until I hit this point:

gcc -o mgp -O2 -fno-strength-reduce -L/usr/X11R6/lib mgp.o draw.o
parse.o plist.o globals.o x11.o font.o background.o scanner.o grammar.o
postscript.o tfont.o embed.o unimap.o mng.o -L./image -lmgpimage -lttf
-L/usr/local/lib -L/usr/local/lib -lm -L/usr/lib -lpng -lXext -lX11
./image/libmgpimage.a(png.o): In function ngLoad':
png.o(.text+0x1aa): undefined reference to ng_set_palette_to_rgb'
png.o(.text+0x1cc): undefined reference to ng_set_gray_1_2_4_to_8'
png.o(.text+0x204): undefined reference to ng_set_tRNS_to_alpha'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [mgp] Error 1

Can someone suggest what I need to do?

On a different topic, two of the pages for this upcoming talk display
equations that I wrote in WordPefect-8 and printed to a disk file using the
supplied HP LJ5 color PostScript printer driver. I used ImageMagick's
convert function to create .jpg files from the .ps files, then used The GIMP
to crop them. All this works just fine, and the '%image ...' command
displays them without a hitch. But, the background I'm using is
'lemonchiffon' and the background for the equation images is white.

Is there a way to make the .jpg image background transparent so the mpg
background color shows through?

TIA,

Rich
