(mgp-users 00367) how do I use the good fonts?

Hello,

I've recently begun using MagicPoint, but haven't quite been able to figure
out how to use fonts that don't appear blocky. Most of the screen captures
of MagicPoint that I've seen on the web appear much better than what my
machine displays.

I'm new the the mailing list, and looked at some, but not all, of the
past articles.

FYI, I compiled the FreeType library, and then compiled MagicPoint (1.07a),
and looking at the Make output it used the -lfft library, so I belive the
freetype stuff is included. I've also read the README.font and FAQ files,
and while they both give hints of what to do, I wasn't able to discern the
specific steps I need to take. I did download some of the suggested fonts
the CTAN ones mentioned in default.mgp, but I wasn't exactly sure where to
put them, such that MagicPoint would use them. So I put them at:
	/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType

Then I did an "xset fp refresh", but this didn't help. (I modified default.mgp)
many times to try cmss10.ttf as the "standard" font, but I obviously haven't
been able to figure out the correct incantation.

Thanks for any help you can provide,
	Bill
