for absolute best results i have this:
[01:52:04](2)spqr:cpg$ cat ~/.mgprc
tfdir "/opt/fonts/ttfonts/all"
[01:52:09](2)spqr:cpg$
then, have ttf fonts in /opt/fonts/ttfonts/all
then,
in the header of your mgp file
do this:
%deffont "standard" tfont "comic.ttf"
and so forth. comic sans ms is a good font
(from microsoft unfortunately).
