Using Xft will in effect get you both Freetype2, AND get you anti-aliased
rendering.  While you can do this manually (start with Freetype2, and
then use Render directly) its intent is to make life easier with an
API at least somewhat similar to core X calls.

And this isn't an exclusive thing: you could use Freetype2, and then turn
around and use Render when available.

This new code also does subpixel decimation (similar to Cleartype on
Microsoft, though different algorithms).
